His nickname is the Belldozer. Blake Bell, the new starting quarterback at Oklahoma, lived up to the billing in his first start in Norman, throwing for 413 yards and four touchdowns. He completed 73 per cent of his passes, finishing the game with a QBR of 96.7. Bell was a situational quarterback last season, used mainly in goal-line situations due to his 66, 252 pound frame. After losing the starting gig in the spring, Bell has taken over the reins from Trevor Knight and Kendal Thompson. Under Bob Stoops, the Sooners have often been set behind centre but after losing Landry Jones and his school record 39 wins to the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL, the program needed someone to step forward. Bell seems firmly planted in the role, and it will be exciting to see what he does going forward. The Sooners have a bye week before traveling to Notre Dame to take on the Fighting Irish. A road game in front of 80,000 fans will be a much bigger test than a home date against Tulsa but its something he should be able to handle well. Bells gaudy stats from his debut as a starter were school records, which is impressive when you consider the list of quarterbacks before him, including Sam Bradford, the number one overall pick playing with the St. Louis Rams. In college, much like the NFL, its becoming increasingly important to have a mobile quarterback. Having Bell, who is used to converting short distance situations, also put up a record setting showing as a pocket passer bodes well for the Sooners going forward. An opposing assistant coach in the Big 12 was quoted as saying Bell is "an effective goal-line guy but not sure how hell do as a primary option. He might do great, but the jurys still out". After his performance against Tulsa, Bell put the rest of the Big 12 on notice and hell be a player to watch, not only against Notre Dame but also when he kicks off the conference schedule one week later against TCU. Look for The Belldozer to prove hes much more than just a flashy nickname in the weeks to come. Other quick hits from around the NCAA: - Bo Pelini may be in hot water for his remarks about the Cornhusker faithful but his teams performance against UCLA should be more of a concern. Leading by 18 late in the first half, Nebraska was outscored 38-0 the rest of the way on their home turf. UCLA is an up-and-coming program, but that is still an awful showing in what was supposed to be a statement game for Pelini and his squad. - Kenny Guiton started in place of the injured Braxton Miller and led Ohio State to an 18-point victory at California. Urban Meyer didnt dumb down the offence at all as Guiton proved capable with 276 yards passing and four touchdowns. The Buckeyes have one more creampuff on the schedule in Florida A&M before opening their conference schedule at The Horseshoe against Wisconsin. - Jameis Winston is putting up some crazy stats for the Florida State Seminoles. Replacing EJ Manuel as quarterback was supposed to be a tough transition for the freshman but through two games, he has six passing touchdowns, two more on the ground and amazingly only five incompletions. - TCU is known for scheduling tough non-conference games in an effort to boost their rankings in the polls should they record victories. The strategy has seemingly backfired this season with losses to LSU and Texas Tech. The Horned Frogs find themselves out of the polls heading into their bye week. - Stanford beat Army by two touchdowns in an underwhelming performance for the 5th-ranked Cardinal. Army trailed at halftime by just one score and was looking to make history. Their program hasnt defeated a ranked team since 1972 – which is now 42 consecutive losses. - Butch Jones had a chance to start his coaching tenure at Tennessee with three straight victories, something that hadnt been done since 1926. How did his Vols respond? By giving up 59 points to the Oregon Ducks and losing by 45 points. - The coolest stat of the week comes from Oklahoma State. They managed a 56-point victory of Lamar, despite losing the time of possession battle by 15 minutes. For more on the college football season check out the TSN podcast each week! The fourth-seeded Chinese star beat Dominika Cibulkova 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 at Rod Laver Arena to capture her first Australian Open title on Saturday. Li played in her third final in four years at Melbourne Park. She lost to Kim Clijsters in 2011 and Victoria Azarenka last year before finally breaking through at the seasons first Grand Slam event against the 20th-seeded Cibulkova. "After I win the match, I really, really exciting," Li said. "I think I have drops still coming down, you know. I try to have hug with the team, but is too high. I cannot catch it (laughter)." Her win came at the end of a fortnight featuring an array of surprising results on the womens side. It was the first time since 1997 that none of the top three seeds made the semifinals. Li committed 25 of her 30 unforced errors in a competitive opening set before she unexpectedly breezed through the second. She had a 34-11 advantage in winners, many coming on her lethal backhand, and converted half of her 10 break-point chances. The second double fault by Cibulkova in the matchs opening game gave Li an early break. A double fault then hurt Li as Cibulkova gained a break to level the first set at 3-all. Li earned a break point with a strong backhand winner in the ninth game, but two of her forehands flew long and Cibulkova was able to hold for a 5-4 lead. After closing out a relative easy service game with an ace to extend the set, Li earned two break points when she followed up Cibulkovas sixth double fault with a blistering ccrosscourt backhand.dddddddddddd Cibulkova then netted a backhand to give Li a 6-5 lead before she broke back to force a tiebreak. Li raced out to a commanding 5-1 lead in the tiebreak and she later claimed the 70-minute first set when Cibulkova dumped a backhand into the net. The second set lasted only 27 minutes and ended with Cibulkova sending a ground stroke long. "You know, it was my first Grand Slam finals and Im just proud with the way I handle it," Cibulkova said. "You know, I just went on the court. I wanted to play my best tennis. It wasnt easy against her because she was playing extremely well. So Im quite happy." Li, who turns 32 next month, captured her second Grand Slam title, adding to her victory at the 2011 French Open, and improved to 9-11 in career finals. She also is just the fourth woman to win the Aussie Open crown after saving a match point. She fought off the match point in the third round against Lucie Safarova and joined Monica Seles (1991), Jennifer Capriati (2002) and Serena Williams (2003 and 2005) to accomplish the feat. "Yeah, start of tournament everybody talking about the age," Li said. "I would like to say age is nothing. Still can win the Grand Slam. So pretty happy about my age. I got more experience on the court." Cibulkova, who stands just 5-foot-3, knocked off No. 3 seed Maria Sharapova in the fourth round and No. 5 seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the semifinals to become Slovakias first Grand Slam finalist. The 24-year-old fell to 3-6 in her career title tilts and 0-5 against Li.
